'mini split' heat pumps are not a perfect heat source in Nova Scotian winters, there is a limit in outside temperature at which they cannot extract enough heat to warm the inside. The premises is also fitted with oil fired furnace for these days and nights. Ideally set the temperature of the heat pump, then set the furnace thermostat a little cooler (1-2 deg) if the heat pump cannot keep the house warm, the furnace will kick in and supply heat.
